Richard Ager was admitted as a solicitor in 1981 and transferred to the Bar in 2004. Whilst a solicitor he specialised in Family work, being a member of the Law Society’s Children Panel. He was active in Resolution and sat on the national management committee of National Family Mediation.
Richard acts for Local Authorities, parents and children in care and related cases. He acts for Local Authorities, family members and the “patient” in Mental Capacity Act 2005 cases in the Court of Protection as well as in displacement of nearest relative cases in the County Court.
He is active in the local FJB being Chair of the sub group on performance tasked with reporting on and trying to achieve conclusion of Family cases within statutory time scales.
Richard has provided training to Sussex and Worthing Law Societies on Court of Protection work and training on proceedings under Children Act 1989.
Richard was Chair of Governors of a large primary school in West Sussex. Whilst in that role he had responsibility for Special Educational Needs provision which is another area of interest to him.

Richard has a very strong reputation in all the area of Children (Public) Law, representing local authorities, parents, grandparents, children, interveners and guardians. Richard’s experience includes acting in cases involving allegations of sexual abuse, including historical sexual abuse, non-accidental injury and fabricated induced illness.
Richard is instructed on behalf of parents, children and extended family members in the full range of applications. These include difficult cases of implacable hostility, shared care arrangements, internal and external relocation, special guardianship and fact-finding hearings regarding domestic violence, sexual abuse and children giving evidence.
Richard is experienced in dealing with urgent and non-urgent cases including: Non-molestation orders and Occupation orders.
Richard regularly appears in the Court of Protection in both welfare and property and affairs cases. He has experience of interim and final hearings, in cases ranging from deputyship applications to proceedings concerning the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
