Crown Office Row Brighton is hosting a Seminar on the Court of Protection on Wednesday 7th May.
On 19 March, the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Cheshire West concerning the issue of deprivation of liberty and related safeguards. Two members of chambers were involved in the case and appeared before the Supreme Court. Richard Ager will discuss the implications of this decision. Martin Downs will talk about Marriage, Sex and the Court of Protection based on the recent reported cases he has appeared in. Paul Ashwell will provide a case law update on recent property and affairs decisions.
Speakers:
Richard Ager has represented Local Authorities, family members and, in other types of proceedings, patients through the Official Solicitor. He has also lectured the Worthing and District Law Society and Local Authorities on Court of Protection work.
Martin Downs’ practice principally covers Human Rights, Local Government (including Police) and Family Law. In addition, he is concerned with mental health law, best interest jurisdiction and cases concerning the protection of older people. In 2013, he appeared in YLA v PM; Re UF; and Re E concerning different aspects of the Court of Protection.
Paul Ashwell has a broad property, commercial and probate practice. Recommended in Chambers and Partners 2013 who say he is an “‘outstanding local name’.
