Catriona Murdoch’s article on the misuse of the internet by jurors has been published in the Criminal Law and Justice Weekly journal.

Catriona argues that a clearer picture is emerging of routine breaches of the juror’s oath, as a result of the changes in the way we use the internet. The article proposes a novel reform; the appointment of an independent court appointed individual to be present during jury deliberations. A Jury Monitor (“JM”) would play no role in the deliberations and his mandate would be to act only if misconduct is alleged or observed.
