David Evans QC successfully obtained permission to disclose confidential documents from family law proceedings to the Security Service.

The application, made on behalf of the Metropolitan Police, led the High Court to give guidance on the approach to such requests in a novel but growing area of law. It is one of a number of cases concerning counter-terrorism and the Syrian conflict in which 1COR members have recently been involved. Only this month Martin Downs has appeared in a widely reported case where a young male was made a ward of Court and prevented from going to Syria to preserve his life.

Adam Wagner was also instructed by the Metropolitan Police at an earlier stage of the proceedings. Angus McCullough QC has appeared in many of these cases instructed as a special advocate. Oliver Sanders acted as Counsel to the Intelligence Services Commissioner on his inquiry into the government’s responsibilities in relation to partner counter-terrorism units overseas. Marina Wheeler QC has been interviewed on BBC Radio and written widely elsewhere on the legal issues.
