Matthew Phipps joined Chambers as a school leaver in 1983 and qualified as a member of The Institute of Barristers’ Clerks in 1988. When he joined there were 24 members including 4 silks. He has played a pivotal role in the development and expansion of the set, which now comprises over 120 members including 25 silks and became senior clerk in 1999.
Although still an active clerk himself Matthew heads up the clerking team and is responsible for all aspects of Chambers’ practice management and in conjunction with the Chambers Director plays a key role in the marketing, business development and strategic planning.
Recommended by the directories as “excellent” and “runs a tight ship” our chambers remain in the top twenty sets for client service.
In the Legal 500 2021 the clerks are praised by clients, who say:
‘I have thought for many years that the quality of clerking at One Crown Office Row is head and shoulders above the rest. The phone is always answered promptly and the clerks are always helpful, practical and pleasant. Matthew Phipps, senior clerk, runs a very tight ship and is popular with all the clerks. He leads by example: the quality of service has been instilled in all clerks by him. Worthy of particular praise are John Mclaren and Chloe Turvill. Both are well organised and keen to assist solicitors in any way they can. John is particularly strong at marketing and is a real asset to the set.’
‘Matthew Phipps and Andy Tull are stars and lead a very impressive team. They are both extremely accessible and accommodating, and take ownership of any concerns or issues.’
‘Their clerks are excellent. They know their teams and can advise you quickly on replacement barristers. I find the key to clerking is speed in response. When looking to instruct new Counsel, we normally approach three or four sets. Therefore coming back quickly is a benefit and, 1COR are particularly hot on this area.’
‘The clerking team is second to none. Matthew Phipps and Andy Tull warrant particular mention. Committed and always on hand to assist they instil confidence and a real team working ethic between chambers and instructing solicitors.’
‘Clerks are exceptional. Will go the extra mile to help solicitors and they’re administratively excellent.’
‘Clerks with personality, helpful and flexible. Every other chambers should aspire to be like them.’
‘Excellent clerks led impressively from the top by Matthew Phipps and Andy Tull. They are the easiest clerks to work with and are wholly reliable in terms of recommendations and who is available to do what.’
