Jim Duffy’s practice spans inquests and inquiries, clinical negligence, personal injury, human rights, tax and employment. He is a member of the Attorney General’s ‘B’ Panel of London Counsel. Jim is described in the Legal 500 as “an exceptional barrister. He is thorough and practical and his preparation is second-to-none.”

Having practised as a solicitor in human rights law for three years, Jim transferred to the Bar in 2012 and went on to act as Judicial Assistant to Lord Reed and Lord Hodge in the Supreme Court. He has returned to the Court twice since then, most recently in the 2021 appeal in Majera (Rwanda) v SSHD, where he made submissions on behalf of the Home Secretary.

Jim graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2005 with a First in Law with French Language and the class prize in Law. He spent a year at Paul Cézanne Université in Aix-en-Provence. He undertook an exchange to the Paris Bar in 2016.

As a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, Jim obtained an LL.M degree from the University of Toronto in 2007. He went on to intern at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva.

Jim co-presents leading legal podcast, Law Pod UK, and is a former editor of the UK Human Rights Blog.  He has contributed to practice notes in public inquiries, employment law and personal injury for Lexis Nexis and Practical Law.

Jim is also able to accept instructions in public inquiry and employment work in Scotland.
