Jim Duffy

Jim Duffy’s practice spans inquests and inquiries, clinical negligence, personal injury (particularly abuse claims), public law, indirect tax and employment. He is a member of the Attorney General’s ‘A’ Panel of London Counsel, and co-presenter of the leading legal podcast, Law Pod UK.

Jim is currently instructed as a senior junior on the team representing the largest cohort of core participants in the Lampard Inquiry into mental health deaths in Essex.

He often advises survivors of abuse. He currently represents (unled) many of the women abused by the late former Harrods owner, Mohammed Al Fayed.

Jim has considerable experience in coronial law, regularly appearing at inquests for bereaved families and state bodies. He was a contributor to The Inquests Book.

Before coming to the Bar in 2012, Jim  practised in human rights law as a solicitor (qualified in Scotland, England and Wales).

He went on to act as Judicial Assistant to Lord Reed and Lord Hodge. He has returned to the Supreme Court twice since then, in N v Poole Borough Council and Majera (Rwanda) v SSHD.

Jim graduated from the University of Glasgow with a First Class Honours degree in Law with French Language (McCormick Prize for the Most Distinguished Graduate in Law).  He has a Masters degree (LL.M) from the University of Toronto (Rotary Scholar), and he also spent a year at Paul Cézanne Université in Aix-en-Provence. He went on to intern at UNHCR in Geneva, and undertook an exchange to the Paris Bar in 2016.

Jim is a past editor of the UK Human Rights Blog. He has contributed to practice notes for Lexis Nexis and Practical Law.

In addition to his practice south of the border, Jim is able to accept instructions in employment matters and public inquiries in Scotland.
