Jonathan Metzer has been appointed to the Attorney General’s Panel of Special Advocates following the latest round of recruitment.
Special Advocates appear in closed material proceedings in a variety of courts and tribunals, where evidence is relied on that cannot be shown to a party in the interests of national security. The Government website explains that they perform a crucial role by representing the interests of excluded parties and subjecting closed material to independent scrutiny, ensuring that individuals’ access to justice is protected in cases which can be high profile and complex.
Jonathan has substantial experience in immigration law, where he represents claimants in complex asylum, human rights and criminal deportation appeals, judicial review claims, applications for injunctions against removal and in damages claims for unlawful detention (including recently providing successful representation at a fully contested unlawful detention trial). He also has considerable experience in inquests (where he often represents families in complex Article 2 inquests) and public inquiries, wider public law and civil liberties work (including representing claimants in actions against the police), and in clinical negligence and tax law.
He is recognised as a leading junior by both Chambers & Partners and The Legal 500 in several areas of practice.
He is also a member of the UK Human Rights Blog’s editorial team.
Angus McCullough KC and Shaheen Rahman KC are also on the Attorney General’s Panel of Special Advocates.
