Darragh Coffey recently appeared at the inquest into the death of Professor Amit Patel, a consultant haematologist who passed away at age 43 after receiving treatment at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester.

Professor Patel presented to hospital in August 2021 with flu-like symptoms and was ultimately diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymph histiocytosis (HLH) likely caused by Still’s disease. During his treatment Professor Patel underwent an endo bronchial ultrasound, which led to him suffering a pulmonary haemorrhage and required ECMO therapy as a result. He never recovered, and passed away in October 2021.

The inquest heard that prior to the EBUS Professor Patel had a 75% chance of survival, but this fell to just 10% after the procedure. The inquest was adjourned on 4 April, and will resume on 1 and 2 May.
