Robert Wastell is acting as junior counsel for the Treasury in the Supreme Court case regarding the Treasury’s action against Bank Mellat in response to the threat of Iranian nuclear proliferation.

The Iranian Bank is challenging an order made under the Financial Restrictions (Iran) Order 2009. This Order was made under the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008 on the basis that Bank Mellat had provided banking services to an organisation connected to Iran’s proliferation-sensitive activities and had been involved in transactions related to financing Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programme. The Supreme Court in this case will also determine whether or not it can receive closed / secret material. The Human Rights Charity “Liberty” and the Bank’s shareholders are intervening in this case.
