On 16 December 2011 the Leeds Employment Tribunal handed down its judgment on remedy in Michalak v The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust & Ors, awarding Dr Michalak a total of £4,452,202.60 (thought to be the largest ever tribunal award in a discrimination case). In June 2010 the Tribunal ruled that Dr Michalak had been unfairly dismissed from her post as a consultant physician within the Medical Admissions Unit of Pontefract General Infirmary and that she had been subjected to unlawful discrimination on grounds of her gender and ethnicity. Richard Mumford successfully represented doctors from the Yorkshire Deanery who had been joined to the proceedings and accused of knowingly aiding unlawful acts of discrimination; as a consequence of the Tribunal’s original ruling, the Deanery was not required to contribute to the compensation awarded to the claimant.
